A GUIDE TO JUTSU

Jutsu are the arts a ninja will utilize in battle. To use a technique, the ninja will need to use their chakra. To perform a technique, the ninja will bring out and release the two energies of chakra. By forming hand seals, the ninja is able to manifest the desired technique. Because of the extensive number of hand seals and different combinations, there are thousands of potential techniques to be discovered.

Depending on the difficulty or skill necessary to perform a technique, they are ranked differently. There are six different ranks in techniques.

E-rank - Basic and most fundamental techniques for all ninja.
D-rank - Can be achieved by all Genin, though many ninja only learn their "type" of technique.
C-rank - Generally achieved by Chuunin. Sometimes learned by Genin who have trained extensively.
B-rank - Jounin-level techniques. Require high levels of chakra to use.
A-rank - Kage or Jounin-level techniques. Require great control over one's chakra. Possibly forbidden
S-rank - Secret, deadly, extreme level techniques. Are typically unique to a single user.

Shinobi Tactic #1: Taijutsu - More commonly referred to as hand-to-hand combat, Taijutsu is a basic form of jutsu that typically does not require chakra, but chakra may be used to enhance techniques. Taijutsu generally require no hand seals to perform and are much quicker to use than Ninjutsu or Genjutsu.

Shinobi Tactic #2: Genjutsu - Employed in the same fashion as Ninjutsu, requiring chakra and hand seals, Genjutsu create illusions. Instead of attacking the victim's body, like Taijutsu or Ninjutsu, Genjutsu techniques manipulate the flow of chakra in the victim's brain, thus causing a disruption in their senses. Genjutsu can often be broken out of by physical pain, or the influence of a Bijuu on a Jinchuuriki.

Shinobi Tactic #3: Ninjutsu - Any technique that utilizes chakra and allows the user to perform actions that a normal person otherwise would be incapable of doing is Ninjutsu. The effects of ninjutsu are actual and physical in most cases. Ninjutsu relies on chakra and, most of the time, hand seals to be effective.
The hands are put in sequential positions that moulds and moulds chakra in the necessary manner to perform a jutsu. Additionally, many Ninjutsu can be classified as an Elemental jutsu, in those cases where a specific element is used. When creating a Ninjutsu, the two methods of manipulating chakra are referred to as Shape Transformation and Nature Transformation. Shape Transformation deals with controlling the form, movement, and potency of chakra. Nature Transformation usually deals with changing the physical properties of chakra into an element. These two methods can be implemented separately or together in order to create a Ninjutsu.

There are many sub-categories of Ninjutsu, including Fuuinjutsu (sealing techniques), Hidenjutsu (secret techniques passed through clans or regions), Juinjutsu (cursed seal techniques), Kinjutsu (forbidden techniques), Nintaijutsu (Ninja Body Techniques), and Senjutsu (Sage Techniques).

However, there are also techniques that are able to be used through Bloodline Inheritance. These are Kekkei Genkei. It's possible for a ninja to have more than one of these abilities (but unlikely). Kekkei Genkai that work via the user's eye are called doujutsu. Other Kekkei Genkai include mixing one type of elemental chakra with another, creating a new one unique to the users, which is usually impossible for normal ninja.

There is also Bloodline Selection (Kekkei Touta), which allows the user to combine three elemental natures.

BASIC CHAKRA NATURES

KATON : FIRE RELEASE

Primarily an offensive-type nature, techniques that primarily allow the user to create fire by increasing the temperature of their chakra are used to form Katon. There are some exceptions to this though in which the shinobi forms mediums in order to create explosions. Commonly affiliated with the Tiger hand seal, Fire Release techniques are mid-to-long-ranged that cause burning and explosive damage. Fire Ninjutsu is common among Konohagakure ninja, with the Uchiha clan being especially proficient with its use. Amaterasu, a Mangekyou Sharingan technique that ignites a target with powerful black flames, is known as the highest level fire technique. Amaterasu has been seen to be unquenchable.

Fire Release is strong against wind because air naturally feeds fire but weak against water

[/b] due to its ability to extinguish flames. A sufficiently powerful fire technique can overcome its natural weakness of water by evaporating it.

FUUTON : WIND RELEASE

Primarily an offensive-type techniques that allow the user to manipulate wind by shaping their chakra to be as sharp and as thin as possible, very much like the blades of a pair of scissors are used to form Fuuton. The rarest of the five basic elemental chakra natures, wind techniques are suited for short-to-mid-range combatants, and combine brute force and precision to deal cutting and slashing damage. Despite its rarity, Wind Release is common to shinobi of Sunagakure. Wind-based techniques are typically performed by causing/generating movement in the air, such as the user blowing air from their mouth or creating air currents with objects. Users can even channel wind-natured chakra into blades to increase their range and cutting power. Wind-based techniques can also be made stronger if the user can generate a force of suction behind their target.

Wind is naturally strong against lightning[/color] techniques due to air being a strong electrical insulator, and likewise naturally weak against fire techniques due to fire's ability to consume and grow when exposed to air. In the case of a combination, it augments the strength of a fire technique as well as increases the concussive power of a water technique.

RAITON : LIGHTNING RELEASE

Raiton nature allows the user to generate lightning by increasing the high frequency vibrations of their chakra, allowing for piercing damage and fast movement. The electricity paralyzes the target so that they are unable to move and leave them vulnerable to a finishing strike. While uncommon, lightning can be infused into bladed weapons in a way similar to Wind Release through chakra flow for increased the piercing power through vibrations, with the added effect of inducing numbness. When the technique is released from their bodies, and thus not requiring physical contact, it does not move as fast as true lightning. Instead, due to the control the user has to exert over it, it moves far slower, which can give opponents time to still react. Based on the exhaustion seen when using Lightning Release techniques, it can be presumed that they require more chakra than the other nature transformations.

Common to the ninja of Kumogakure, a lightning technique is naturally weak against wind[/color], and strong against earth[/color], as lightning can easily travel through it, as well as break it apart.

Lightning also has a unique relation with water[/color], since water conducts electricity. This means that a Water Release technique can be used to increase the damage of a Lightning Release technique and vice versa.

DOTON : EARTH RELEASE

A Doton nature allows the user to manipulate the surrounding earth for offensive and defensive purposes or create it; be it dirt, mud, or rock. Earth Release techniques have the ability to change the strength and composition of the earth from being as hard as metal to as soft as clay. This includes allowing the user to travel through ground and rock in various ways which can be essential for both transportation and for setting up attacks or creating defences or for offence. Indeed, this makes earth techniques one of the most versatile of the elemental techniques. Pre-existing earth is not necessary though, for the user can create it with their own chakra.

Earth Release affinities are the most common among the ninja of Iwagakure, and is commonly affiliated with the Snake seal and/or slamming their palm onto the ground.

Earth Release is naturally strong against water but likewise, Earth Release is also naturally weak against lightning[/b], as lightning chakra cannot be grounded.

SUITON : WATER RELEASE

A Suiton nature allows the user to manipulate pre-existing water, or create their own, by turning their chakra into water. It takes much more ability to create the water than to manipulate what is already available and expel it from their mouths. One of the most versatile of the five basic chakra natures, Water Release techniques can not only change shape but state as well. Moreover, the water becomes more solid in the process as well.

The water affinity is common to shinobi of Kirigakure. The offensive water techniques commonly appear to do damage from the sudden force that they exert, which would cause massive internal damage to a human.

Water Release will naturally extinguish fire (though a sufficiently powerful technique can cause evaporation) but will naturally be overcome by earth[/color]. When water techniques are combined with Wind Release techniques, the concussive and overall destructive power is vastly increased. Also, water is efficient in combination with lightning, increasing the flow of electricity into the target.

ADVANCED CHAKRA NATURES - KEKKEI GENKEI

HYOUTON : ICE RELEASE

Hyouton is the advanced nature kekkei genkai of the Yuki clan of Kirigakure, and allows the users to combine wind- and water-based chakra to create ice which he could manipulate through willpower alone. The ice created by this clan is largely immune to fire-based attacks, only melting slightly when coming into contact with flames. Using this ability, the user is able to create mirrors to act like a shield or a near inescapable trap. The user can melt into the mirrors and throw themselves at high speeds from mirror to mirror. Naturally, having nearby water is an advantage, as the user can simply freeze that water to create ice.

MOKUTON : WOOD RELEASE

Mokuton is an advanced nature kekkei genkai that combines earth- and water-based chakra to create wood and/or living trees. Wood Release techniques can be produced from anywhere, including the user's body, as the user's chakra is literally converted into a source of life. Wood Release is commonly affiliated with the Snake seal.

Hashirama Senju was the originator of this ability, evidenced by the fact that no other member of his clan were known to possess this ability. His ability to use these techniques was one of the reasons for him being given the title of the First Hokage, and with Wood Release Secret Technique: Nativity of a World of Trees he was able to grow the trees that served as the foundation of Konohagakure. This technique allowed him to completely reshape the battlefield to his advantage.

Orochimaru, in his quest to harvest the First Hokage's abilities, injected his DNA into sixty test subjects, and out of the sixty only Yamato survived. This gave Yamato the Wood Release abilities. Currently, Yamato is still a young child, about 7 years old.

YOUTON : LAVA RELEASE

Youton is an advanced nature kekkei genkai that combines fire- and earth-based chakra to create a torrent of lava that can melt away almost anything. This chakra nature can also manipulate other related materials such as lime, which is an alkaline powder, rather than molten rock. Lava Release is used by the Yonbi (Four-Tails) and its Jinchuuriki Roushi. Roushi's clan is able to use Lava Release as well.

EXPANSION CHAKRA NATURES - KEKKEI TOUTA

JINTON : DUST RELEASE

Jinton is created by combining the earth, wind, and fire natures. The techniques of this nature initially form as a small three-dimensional object composed of chakra that forms between the user's hands. When the technique is released, the form expands and surrounds the target. This element allows the user to manipulate molecules, giving them the ability to disintegrate anything on a molecular level within the boundaries of the three-dimensional form. The only users of Jinton are the current Tsuchikage, Muu, and his student, Ounoki.[/blockquote]
